Do you end up switching between multiple pillows?
What if a good night sleep had everything to do with HOW you sleep on your pillow versus how expensive your pillow is?!
A year into my practice I realized that so many patients were asking me about their pillows and which pillow I thought was the best. I realized that I had a reasonably expensive pillow at home that I loved for sleeping on my side, but also a super cheap Ikea pillow that I loved for sleeping on my stomach (Yes, there is a way you can do that on and off without messing up your neck! Schedule an evaluation with me!).
It’s really not about your pillow, its more about what position you sleep in, and how you end up sleeping on your pillow. No matter which way you sleep, these are the TWO most important things:
- Your neck should ALWAYS be neutral. If you’re lying on your side, the pillow should be just high enough that your head doesn’t drop down or isn’t pushed up. If you’re laying on your back, it should be soft enough that your head drops back and your neck is level in its natural curve. You should not feel like your chin is jutting forward.
- Keep your shoulders OFF your pillow! I’m always surprised how many people feel they have to use their whole pillow, which means their head is in the upper 1/3, the neck is in the middle 1/3, and their shoulders take up the lower 1/3. This position will never allow you to sleep with your spine in all of its neutral curves. Move them!!
If you’re a patient not to worry, we probably looked over your pillows on one of your first visits to make sure that you’d start getting a decent night’s sleep quickly.
If you’re not a patient, but would still like to find out if you’re sleeping on your pillows correctly, all you have to do is give me a call at 323-362-2346. I offer a sleeping pillow evaluation for an affordable $25! It might even save you a bunch of unnecessary cash spent on yet another pillow!
