A most silly story, one that is an embarrassment to myself, but very telling of how crazy and simply the body works happened while I was in chiropractic school. It had been a very long and stressful quarter and we were coming upon finals week. I walked out of the chiropractic building and stepped off the curb and felt my entire lower back and lower body freeze up. It was really one of those moments where I said, "Wow, that just happened to me. Yes, I'm definitely stuck bent over like this!" I had sharp sciatic pain down my leg, but I knew that my back did not need to be adjusted. My friend's, who know I have a strict philosophy on upper cervical care, helped me wobble down the student clinic so I could get checked myself. After getting a quick scan we could easily see that my atlas had misaligned with just that little step off the curb, because I was already in such a state of stress. My clinician made a correction and just 45 minutes later after rest, I was standing up again with no sciatica or pain.
Another topic that comes to mind when we think of slips or falls we dismiss from our childhood are really the childhood activities that we participate in. As a Doctor and not just as a Chiropractic, hence the "Doctor of Chiropractic" most of my patients are truly shocked as to how thorough a history I take on incoming patients. Everything about our past has an effect on our current and future state of health. Its surprising to me how many of my patients have gymnastics, horse back riding, or soccer in their health history. These activities seem to be doing the greatest harm to the public. Now as some who believes we should live life to the fullest, I'm not saying you should give up on these activities, I just think you should also get checked regularly to make sure everything is still working properly!
Almost all of us have experienced a car accident or two which have the greatest chance of causing subluxation. A huge car accident right after high school is actually how I even first heard of chiropractic! I'll share more about car accidents in a future post. As you can see, even something you think is the most minor of accidents has the potential to cause this subluxation in the body and lessen the body's ability to function at its best and heal as it was created to do.
