Are you dreading this day?

I recently did something I pretty much never do. I got caught up in my to do list and I cancelled my appointment with my chiropractor because you know... I've been holding 3-4 months, I felt pretty good, and well I just had a ton of stuff to do. I'll reschedule it as soon as I get back from my trip....

Just about 3 weeks later... this is what my body had to say about that decision!

If you know someone who needs to hear this, please share this post/video with them. Then tell them to click the button below so we can have a chat!

MindSet ReSet

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorMindSetReset.jpg

Let’s play a little mind association - chiropractor- adjustment. They go together, right? Crazy as it might sound, this is exactly the perception that I’d like to change.

To start with, it’s not surprising. All of your past experience tells you that you go to the chiropractor to get adjusted. I want you to take a moment and really think about what that means. It means that no matter what, you know that when you go to the chiropractor SOMETHING is always wrong with you! Isn’t that sad? It seems that human nature makes us assume that something will always be wrong with us.

When patients come to my office, we have a mindset “reset.” We work on retraining our brains to understand WHY we go to the chiropractor, and also how we should feel when we go there. I love helping my patients feel better in their bodies. It’s why I became an upper cervical chiropractor in the first place. The body has an amazing ability to heal itself when it’s allowed to function the way it was designed to.

In my office, utilizing upper cervical (UC) chiropractic care, I’m able to check a patient using objective testing (a thermal scan) to see if they are truly stuck, or if their body is just stressed out and needs some other form of help and self care. Many times the brain and nervous system are doing exactly what they were designed to do (self healing), but we have overused them to a point where they’re not actually stuck - just in a state of high stress.

Using the scan allows me to determine if patients truly need an adjustment or not AND lets me help them focus on ways to feel better while their body is doing its job. This new mindset allows them to see how amazing the body truly is -- that it can actually hold a correction and that they can keep making improvements so that they don’t need to get adjusted as often.

So let's try this again - chiropractor…checkup! I mean, how much better is it to focus on how well your body can function? I try to relate it to going in for a mammogram, pap smear, or prostate exam. You go in, pay for the test, and truly hope nothing is wrong! Wouldn’t you love to go see someone with an optimistic outlook on your health? Someone who also does a happy dance with you when you find out you don’t need an adjustment because your body is being awesome?!

Of course, if you do need an adjustment (think of this as a tiny nudge in the right direction) we can do that, and then focus future check ups on maintaining that correction. It takes the body time to heal, time to rest in between adjustments and time to do its job. Come in with a positive mindset and the assumption that your body is adjusting itself!

Next time you're not sure if chiropractic can help you, just remember this association-chiropractor ... brain and nervous system ... all major functions of the body. Your visit is a check up, and having your most important system checked should bring you peace of mind. Chances are, your body is healing itself!

Here is how NOT to find a chiropractor...

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorHowToChooseAChiropractor.jpg

I'm sure you've wondered how to decide who is the best chiropractor to work with, there are so many options to consider when making a decision. Today, I wanted to share how NOT to choose a chiropractor:

1. PRICE: The cheapest or most expensive chiropractor may or may not be the best fit for you. A good bargain for your wallet, may not be the best for your health.

2. DISTANCE: Just because there is a doc down on the street corner, doesn't mean they should be your first choice. Quality care that offers superior results is worth the drive! (I personally drive an hour to see mine!)

3. TIME: Are you looking for a quick fix or lasting results?

4. IN-NETWORK PROVIDER: Having health insurance is a great thing, but I would never let an insurance company determine what I can and can’t have for my health care. They have a legal obligation to make shareholders money, sometimes by denying the services that I need.

5. SKIPS X-RAYS: 95% of us have some type of malformation in the top 3 bones of the neck. In upper cervical chiropractic care we like to say "To x-ray is to see, to see is to know, and to know is NOT to guess!" Do you really want someone guessing with your health?

Instead, here are two things you might want to try instead:

1. Look for a doctor with amazing testimonials and use the referral of a friend.

2. Call the doctor yourself to see if you connect and they're the right fit for you.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic May Help Reduce your Blood Pressure

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorBloodPressureReductionBlog.jpg

As I continue to meet more and more people in my line of work, I am always surprised to learn just how many people in today's society are on blood pressure medications.

While I've never claimed that upper cervical care will help reduce blood pressure, there is an understanding that if the brain stem and surrounding blood vessels are compromised and unable to communicate properly within the body, then our natural systems would not be able to properly maintain normal function. If there is no compromise and the atlas (first bone in the neck) is in its proper place, then the body should be able to use its natural mechanisms to regulate blood pressure.

A study completed in 2007 showed just this. Published in the Journal of Human Hypertension, the placebo-controlled study completed by an upper cervical chiropractor and an MD showed that the upper cervical procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination.

Those who got the real procedure saw an average 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count), and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number). Some of these patients were even able to get off their medications.

Upper cervical chiropractic was even featured on Good Morning America for its success with helping reduce neurological stresses leading to normalizing of blood pressure for those patients.

Make sure to share this article with anyone who is suffering from hypertension that may want to try an alternative to their current health care options!

Want to be Healthier and Happier? Try Increasing Your Orgasms.

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorBlogHealthHappyOrgasms.jpg

3 orgasms a week cut down on heart disease by about 50%. February is Heart Health month and heart disease is a top killer for women. Orgasms reduce stress, improve cardiovascular strength, and make you feel better.

We all lead busy, intense lives that seem to never stop.  Devices, kids, work, relationships all take time, that there never seems to be enough of. I often hear, ‘I am too tired to have sex.’ What ongoing effect is this having on your life? It could be shortening it.

When we climax, oxytocin and other endorphins are released into our bodies. These chemicals bolster the immune system, lift our mood, improve sleep, create emotional bonds, and even act like high-end cosmetic products! Yes, you read that correctly. The endorphins and chemicals discharged during an orgasm, stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen improves skin tone and texture, reducing wrinkles and cellulite. The ‘healthy sex glow’ is not a myth, your skin improves after great sex.

When we look better, we feel better and when we are happier, we are healthier and more fun to be around. We even make more money. Orgasms also reduce stress and calm nerves. Stress in our lives trigger a myriad of health problems including high blood pressure and heart problems, asthma, diabetes, depression and anxiety, gastrointestinal issues, headaches, and obesity.

The lack of sex in a relationship is a top reasons couples argue. Think about the way you feel when you are having fantastic sex. This could be with a partner or self-pleasure. Everything in life is a little easier and smoother. Those everyday irritations, stresses, and agitations, such as traffic or your honey not taking out the trash, melt away. I call sexuality, life’s lubricant.

So, the next time you are feeling a little down, need to reduce your blood pressure, or have a headache, add some sexy time to your day and it will improve!

Is Your SUPERPOWER Activated?

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorBlogAgingStrong.jpg

Have you ever marveled at people who are aging gracefully, adapting to new physical demands, still able to do the things that give them joy year after year? Do they have a secret super power that the rest of us don’t possess?

Sadly, we all probably know more people who are struggling with aches, pains and illness that are slowing them down. We may even view this as normal, just something to be expected as we get older.

But the truth is, our bodies were designed to adapt to changes over time. The human body heals itself continually. Not only after injury or illness, but all the time. The constant replacement of red blood cells (at a rate of about 100 billion a day!) is a great example.

Our bodies are always working to detect and correct imbalances, to adapt to our current environment and to function perfectly. The brain-to-body communication that our nervous system provides is the key to self-healing. When interference with the nervous system inhibits communication between the brain and the body, our self-healing process starts to break down. This shows up in our bodies in a number of ways, even affecting how we age. Studies show that the brain controls the signaling pathways that provide resistance to stress on a cellular level – a key to reducing the effects of aging. A properly functioning nervous system can improve not only your current health, but your longevity.

Are you ready to reclaim your superpower? You can turn your body back into an adaptability specialist with upper cervical chiropractic care. Diagnosing and correcting just one tiny area of the spine alleviates interference in the nervous system. This allows the rest of the spine to reset itself. The end result? Your body works as it was designed to. It adjusts, adapts and heals – that’s powerful!

So if you’re suffering with symptoms that you chalk up to “normal aging,” think again. Struggling as we age is not normal. It’s a sign that our self-healing process is stuck. Let’s turn your body back into the amazing adapter that lets you live happy, healthy and pain free!

Dump the New Year’s Resolutions & Do These 3 R’s Instead!

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorBlogNewYearsResolutions.jpg

We’re almost a week into the new year and most people have already given up on their resolutions. Exercise and/or health related goals are at the top of most people’s resolutions and they are usually never met because of 1 of 2 reasons: they are too general or they are not realistic.

To set yourself up for success this year, I want you to throw out what you’ve already written out and try again right here, right now with the following 3 R’s.

For the sake of simplicity, I’m going to use exercise as an example, but you should be able to use this for all of your resolutions/goals this year.

Many people jump into the new year by saying they will “exercise more” or “work out 30 minutes, 3-5 times a week.” While this is a fabulous goal to try and get to, if you haven’t exercised in the last 6 months or so, you’re going to be overwhelmed by the time you need to put into your schedule, the possible DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), and just how tired or sick you might feel mid work out because you haven’t done it in so long.

Here’s how to approach it instead:

Realistic: Create REALISTIC goals. If you haven’t worked out in a while, you don’t need to jump into 30 minutes, 3-5 times a week. Start small and change the goals as you succeed. For some of you that may mean just 5-15 minutes, 3-5 times a week. For others it will be as simple as taking a family walk every evening after dinner. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just realistic and doable. When you meet your goal decide if you’re ready to increase it.

Reward: The next big thing with goal setting that my mentor taught me is to REWARD yourself! It’s no fun to accomplish a goal and not feel the reward, it doesn’t make your brain want to try again! Make sure your goals are proportional to the goals you set. Say you initially thought you would try working out again after you got a new pair of shoes or yoga mat. Instead, create your small goal and give yourself a small reward – even if it’s a simple as a yoga mat! The new wardrobe will be needed as a reward when you hit the bigger goal, I promise! So here’s the deal – create the realistic goal – set up the proportional reward – meet the realistic goal – REWARD YOURSELF! And – FEEL THE REWARD! Make sure all your cells know what it feels like to be successful so you can and want to do it again.

Restart: Now that you’ve met your goal you get to RESTART, make it just a little bit bigger and the reward a little bit better. Continue to do this and you’ll eventually get to your big goal. There is not rush to get to the final result and I promise your body appreciates the time you gave it to adapt to all the changes. Here’s another thing – if you didn’t make your goal. It’s totally okay. RESTART and do it again the next week with the same reward. The good thing about the New Year is that it’s just an over glorified Monday morning! That means you have 51 more of them this year!

There you have it be REALISTIC, REWARD yourself, and RESTART the process! Your keys to success in reaching your goals this year!

Leave a comment below with one of your first goals and how you’ll be rewarding yourself!

Holidays Can Be Happy, Healthy & Pain Free!

DrNimiraUpperCervicalChiropracticAgouraHillsBLOGHappyHealthHoliday.jpg

December brings joy and festivities, but it also can increase our stress. Despite our efforts to slow down and focus on what matters most, the normal hustle and bustle of this season often affects our overall health.

For some, the holidays can create difficult demands on our time, relationships or finances. For others, the “I can do it all” mentality kicks into high gear this time of year. That’s stressful! And even if your month is filled with fun activities with friends and family, December can take its toll. Simply juggling more commitments and feeling the holiday crunch on our calendars can prompt physical problems, from aches and pains, to decreased immunity, to less emotional resilience when we face stressful situations.

The interesting thing is, from a physical standpoint, our bodies don’t always react proportionally to stress. When we perceive stress, our nervous system responds, even if the stressor is not a true physical threat. Over time, the affect of even small stressors may be enough to kick our bodies into “fight or flight” mode. And that can create problems. The typical result is getting stuck in a negative neurological pattern, rather than adapting and coming back into balance, as our bodies were designed to do.

When functioning properly, our bodies have a wonderful ability to adapt and adjust. Stress undermines that natural ability. With upper cervical care that aligns the top vertebrae, our spine can reset itself. This alleviates pain, bolsters immunity and helps the whole body heal. So this year, make your own holiday wellness plan and hit the “reset” button on seasonal stress.

My holiday wish for you is to spend the season happy, healthy and pain free!

Dr. Nimira's Top 5 Wellness Gifts

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorBLOGTop5WellnessGifts.jpg

It’s December and whether you partake in the holidays or not, you’ll probably have to get a gift for someone this month!

With so many options out there, these are my Top 5 Wellness Gifts* for family, friends, and colleagues.

1. Water Bottle: Sadly, 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated and dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, and digestive issues among other things. My philosophy is that you can never have too many water bottles! My tried and true hydration bottle has always been my 32oz Nalgene Tritan Wide Mouth bottle, but you can also try the newly popular Hydro Flask Double Wall Vacuum Insulated bottle for those that like to keep their water cool or warm. I prefer the 32oz bottle because you don't have to refill it as often and the weight of the bottle naturally makes you drink more frequently so that you're not lugging around a lot of weight!

2. Teamotions Tea: This unique tea was created as a tool to help you tend to your heart. Each tea contains adaptogen herbs and other healing botanicals that restore balance, boost immunity, and increase your body’s resistance to stress and are to be used daily to cultivate a heart-centered approach to emotional health and healing. The original 6 teas are Discover Joy, Seek Peace, Achieve Clarity, Have Hope, Find Strength, and Enjoy Rest. You can buy them here.

3. Massage Gift Certificate: Many people consider massage a luxury item and hardly ever make it to see a really good massage therapist. With all the work we make our body do on a daily basis, I truly believe that massage should be a necessary party of one's self care routine. Treat your favorite person to a massage! For a referral to my favorite massage therapists in the Conejo and San Fernando Valleys, send me an email!

4. A New Pillow: There are 2 kinds of people in this world. One has had the same pillow for the last 20 years (not hygienic) and the other has tested out a ton in the last year! The latter usually has trouble sleeping due to pain or other circumstances. In addition to letting them know about this post, treat them to a Snuggle-Pedic Pillow. A fully customizable treat, they and you'll never try another pillow again! You can get one right here in Agoura HIlls at Selectabed or on Amazon.

5. Instant Pot: The Instant Pot craze is holding strong. Its a great gift, especially for the busy person who wants to make a quick and healthy meal for themselves and family. There are tons of cookbooks, blog posts, and Facebook Groups dedicated to sharing new, easy, and healthy recipes for all types of eating lifestyles. The 8 qt is probably the best deal because we can all easily make small dishes, but having it available for large family meals, gatherings or pot lucks is always a plus. I know that this one is definitely on my wish list!

There you have it, my top 5 wellness gifts that can be used year round and are practical things most people think twice about before buying for themselves.

The Attitude of Gratitude

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorAttitudeofGratitude.jpg

It's all everyone loves to talk about during the month of November, but how often is it actually practiced and can it truly change your life?

I found myself early in September super stressed out. As many of you know, I love doing what I do, but there are only so many hours in a day and I've really just been building my practice as it happened for the last few years while also being mommy to my 2.5 and 7 year olds.

Now that they're a little bit older, I've felt really ready to stand in my purpose and serve those around me who need what I have to offer.

Let's be honest, life doesn't always happen as fast as you want it to!

So what's the one thing I changed and how did it affect me? I started a gratitude journal. I've been trying to get people around me to do one, and I've even kept telling myself to do one, but I always came back to - I don't have time to write for 10, 5, or even 1 minute. Or I can't come up with 10 things each day. I finally gave into my excuses and decided that I could write 3 things everyday - NO MATTER WHAT.

You know what's happened in the last 8 weeks without changing much of anything else - I feel less stress, new patients are finding their way to my phone, email, and even FB Messenger, I'm learning how to better manage my time, AND I doubled the normal number of new patients I usually see in a month.

The best part - this change literally takes about a minute to do every day.

Do you write in a gratitude journal? Share in the comments below what you've started noticing!

TMJD: A Natural Solution to A Complex Problem

Your jaw is among the most complicated joints in your body.  It has a broad range of motion.  It can open and close, move side to side, and slide forward and backward.  All of these motions are utilized during talking, chewing, and yawning. The jaw joint is commonly referred to as the TMJ or temporomandibular joint.  There are many reasons why the jaw may not be functioning properly, and that can lead to pain and discomfort, as well as other associated symptoms.

The way people experience TMJ dysfunction can vary greatly:

        Toothache
        Earache
        Headache
        Neck pain
        Jaw clenching
   Tenderness in the muscles of the face and jaw

Because of the variety of symptoms that a person with TMJ problems can experience, it can be difficult to find a way to address the root cause.  Recommendations often include pain medications or anti-inflammatories, and perhaps being fitted for a bite guard.  These approaches, unfortunately, provide only surface-level relief.

Upper Cervical Care and the TMJ

The focus of upper cervical chiropractic is on the upper two vertebrae in the spine.  What many people may not realize is how closely positioned these vertebrae are to the joints of the jaw on each side.  Because of this, even a slight malposition of the atlas (C1) or axis (C2) can affect the jaw's ability to work properly.  Given the fact that many people who suffer from TMJ pain or discomfort also have neck pain and headaches, it makes sense that the jaw and the neck are connected. The upper cervical chiropractic approach is designed to be extremely specific.  Adjustments are very gentle and do not use a great deal of force to accomplish the necessary correction.   When the upper cervical spine is realigned, the surrounding nerves and soft tissues have the chance to heal.  This can lead to a jaw that moves and works the way it was designed to.

Agoura Hills, California Residents Finding Natural Migraine Help

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorNaturalMigraineHelp.jpg

Migraines can sap a person’s energy and leave one feeling exhausted and unable to complete a normal daily routine. Not only do migraines affect work performance but also recreation and family time. Things such as get-togethers, going to ball games, going on family vacations, and attending work events often have to be put on the back burner, so to speak, until a person is feeling better and recovered. This can take anywhere from a couple of days to an entire week.
Research reports that as many as 9 out of every 10 migraine patients cannot complete their daily tasks while suffering from a migraine. This is further shown by the 113 million days of work missed due to migraines, costing US business approximately $13 billion a year.

Migraines are not just headaches but are neurological in origin. A headache is just one common symptom of a migraine. But not everyone has a headache as a migraine symptom. Also, some people experience chronic migraines, meaning they have 15 or more migraine days per month.

Seeking Care for Migraines

Most of the time, when one seeks care through his family physician or even a specialist, a prescription drug is offered to help alleviate the pain. Some medications try to stop a migraine before it gets severe, while others help block pain signals to help the person cope. Neither option has had a 100% success rate, and medications come along with unwanted side effects like:

  • Nausea
  • Weight gain
  • Hair loss
  • Headaches

This leaves people looking for natural, safe care. However, many do not know where to turn for reliable homeopathic relief.

A Different Approach to Migraines

We offer a natural alternative to help migraine pain that does not involve medication. We understand that migraines are often linked to a misalignment of a person’s atlas or axis bone – the top bones of the spine. If a misalignment has occurred, pressure is placed on the blood vessels responsible for bringing oxygen-rich blood to the brain.
Using a gentle method, we can correct this problem, thereby helping patients experience improved health. Many have seen fewer migraines after care. Some see them go away completely.

Lower Back Pain Alleviated Through Proper Spinal Alignment

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorBackPainRelief.png

Up to 10% of people worldwide are coping with lower back pain. In fact, it is the number one reason people claim disability and time off from work. One in three disability cases is due to problems located in the lower back region, causing many to seek help in an attempt to settle matters before it gets to the point of making one disabled.

How Proper Spinal Alignment Helps Lower Back Pain

It may be surprising to learn that the top bones of the neck are responsible for the way a person’s posture is during rest, showing how vital it is for them to be properly aligned. The C1 and C2 vertebrae are susceptible to misalignment. If this occurs, then a person actually has to think about how to sit or stand straight. This is something that should come naturally, but a misalignment changes more than the bones in the neck. Since we have more important things to think about than focusing on our posture, the body often will fall into whatever position the neck bones dictate.

Another thing to be aware of is how additional tension is created throughout the entire back, not just the neck. Since the head can weigh as much as 14 pounds, if it is off center by just 2 or 3 inches, significantly more weight begins to stress the lower back. This is why a misalignment in the upper neck causes many problems in the lower back.

How Upper Cervical Care Can Help Lower Back Pain

At our Agoura Hills, California office we are able to help many patients to cope with back pain successfully. We use a gentle method that allows the bones to move into place more naturally than twisting or cracking the spine. This method has been shown to have a success rate of up to 95%! At one practice, 77% of those with lower back pain experienced significant improvement, and 18% saw their back pain go away entirely. We strive to provide similar results for our clients.

Are You Stuck or Are You Adapting?

Every time a patient comes to my office, I’m interested in one crucial question: Is your body stuck or is it adapting?

That information gives me a snapshot of where you are from a musculoskeletal standpoint. And that’s what determines whether an upper cervical adjustment will be helpful or not at that time.

Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal and adapt when the upper cervical vertebrae are aligned. But when the top two vertebrae, the atlas and axis, are out of alignment, they can put pressure on the brainstem.

This interferes with the nervous system and inhibits communication between the brain and the body, causing pain and health concerns for many people.

At any point, your body may be on its way to correcting a skeletal misalignment (adapting), or it may be stuck. That’s why the specific, scientific approach of upper cervical chiropractic is so helpful. Every time I see a patient, I’m able to use objective tools to evaluate if an adjustment is needed.

I believe my patients benefit most from a “minimalist” approach to chiropractic care. Simply put, that means:

Your body naturally tries to adapt and find the alignment that’s right for you. When your body is doing what it’s supposed to do, I leave it alone -- and help you find ways to feel better while your body is healing. When it’s stuck, I provide a very specific, small correction. Then I allow that to sink in and see if your body will continue adapting on its own.

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractorStuckAdaptingBlog.jpg

I explained this to one of my riding patients the other day, and she said, “Horse people will definitely understand that philosophy!”

Do you give an aid or correction to your horse regardless of whether it’s needed? Of course not. And, you probably adhere to the “less is more” approach, using the smallest aid that gets the result you’re looking for.

In the chiropractic arena, the minimalist approach means that you will get an evaluation every time you see me, but you’ll only receive a chiropractic adjustment if you need one, and any correction will be as small and specific as possible to achieve the desired effect. We’re looking for a change over time...the goal is to get lasting results that hold, by allowing your body to do its job.

How Can I Tell If You Need an Adjustment?

Sometimes when we’re faced with the “Are you stuck or adapting?” dilemma, the answer correlates with how you feel. Sometimes, it doesn’t. That’s why I use several objective methods of evaluation each time I see you, including infrared thermography and functional leg checks, as well as a subjective assessment based on how you feel to gauge your progress.

There are times when your body is working its way toward better alignment and healing on its own – even if you can’t feel the progress yet. Alternatively, you may be “stuck” and will benefit from an adjustment, even if you’re feeling relatively pain-free that day.

Small Shift, Dramatic Results

As an equestrian athlete, you enjoy a sport where tiny modifications make a big difference in how you feel while you’re riding and how effective you are.

But unlike most athletes, your control over your own body affects more than just you.

Not all my chiropractic patients have a 1,200-pound partner who can tell when you’ve just tipped your head forward, slumped your shoulders or leaned a bit to your left.

A tiny shift can make a big difference when you ride. And not surprisingly, the most minute shift in your skeletal structure has a dramatic effect on your body too. Even small misalignments can cause big problems.

Feel free to schedule a no-obligation phone call with me to learn more about upper cervical care, regardless of your goals -- whether you have ongoing aches and pains, an injury that’s preventing you from riding as you did before, or even if you’re just interested in remaining injury free and staying in the saddle as long as possible.

Let me put the MINIMALIST chiropractic approach to work for you…specific, small corrections for lasting results.

Regaining Clarity from Fibromyalgia-Related Brain Fog

Chronic pain is often the first thing associated with fibromyalgia, but there are many other facets to this condition that affect people.  Fibromyalgia sufferers also experience cognitive changes, such as difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, trouble finding words, and poor short-term memory.  These cognitive difficulties are sometimes referred to as "brain fog" or "fibro fog" and can be extremely frustrating to cope with.

Fighting the fog can start with some simple lifestyle changes:

  • Establish routines for day-to-day tasks.  Doing things like putting your keys in the same spot each time you get home or setting reminders for phone calls or meetings can help with clarity.
  • Declutter your space.  It's difficult for anyone to focus when you're surrounded by too much stuff.  Try to remove distractions around your home and/or office.
  • Get regular exercise.  Low-impact exercises such as walking, swimming, or cycling can improve blood flow and reduce some of the cognitive effects of fibromyalgia.
  • Clean up your sleep habits.  Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day (even on days off) can improve sleep quality.

Getting to the Cause of the Brain Fog

Although much still remains to be understood about the condition of fibromyalgia, one thing researchers tend to agree upon is that there are changes that occur in the way the brain processes signals relating to pain.  These signals can be distorted due to a misalignment of the C1 (atlas) or C2 (axis) vertebra.  This area of the spine is known as the upper cervical area and plays an integral role in ensuring the normal transmission of brain-body signals.
Upper cervical chiropractic is a branch of chiropractic care that focuses specifically on this area of the spine since it is known to cause dramatic health problems when compromised.  In the case of fibromyalgia, the ability to restore normal signals between the brain and body can mean not only a decrease in pain sensitivity but also a reduction in the cognitive deficits known as "fibro fog."

Caring for TMJ Disorders Naturally

Your TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is one of the more complicated joints of the body.  Located on either side of the face just in front of each ear, the TMJ connects the lower part of your jaw (the mandible) to the rest of the head.  It is designed to act as a hinge to open and close the mouth, and also to glide from side to side.
Disorders of the TMJ are fairly common.  Jaw pain and dysfunction can occur after an accident or injury or can arise over time if the jaw is not in proper alignment.  Temporomandibular joint disorders affect twice as many women as men, especially during childbearing years.  It is the most common non-dental related cause of chronic facial pain.

How Do I Know if I Have a TMJ Problem?

There are a variety of signs and symptoms of a TMJ problem.  These symptoms may arise with any jaw movement – opening, closing, or moving the jaw from side to side:

  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Earaches or ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth
  • Pain when biting, chewing, talking or yawning
  • Tenderness of the muscles of the jaw on the sides of the face

What Are My Care Options?

There are many options available to try and minimize TMJ pain and discomfort.  Oftentimes, over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories are recommended to help reduce the pain.  Sometimes muscle relaxants are recommended to address unequal muscle tension on the sides of the face and jaw that are contributing to the dysfunction.  Another common solution is mouth guards, usually worn at night to try and reduce teeth grinding and associated pain.

While most people think to visit either their medical doctor or dentist, there is another option available that is providing lasting relief to TMJD sufferers.  Upper cervical chiropractic addresses very specific misalignments of the uppermost vertebra of the spine, the atlas.  A misalignment of the atlas can affect the TMJ in several ways – it can cause unequal muscle tension in the face affecting the resting position of the jaw, and it can also interrupt nerve signals that tell the jaw how to move and function.  Frequently, all that is needed are gentle adjustments to realign the atlas and time for any damaged soft tissue to heal.

Five Fibromyalgia Facts for Agoura Hills Residents

DrNimiraAgouraHillsChiropractor5FibromyalgiaFacts.jpg

Fibromyalgia is a condition that is becoming increasingly common, and it could be because we are better able to recognize it now than ever before.  The persistent symptoms of fibromyalgia have the potential to disrupt normal, everyday life.  With it being such a common condition, here are five facts that might be helpful to know:

  1. 5 million Americans age 18 and over are affected.  80%-90% of these fibromyalgia sufferers are female.
  2. Fibromyalgia has been linked to certain diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus), illnesses, repetitive injuries, and stressful or traumatic life events.
  3. The most common fibromyalgia symptoms are widespread muscle pain and extreme fatigue, but sufferers can also experience headaches, memory problems, and tingling in the hands and feet.
  4. Fibromyalgia can be difficult to diagnose and treat, particularly because its symptoms can mimic many other health conditions.
  5. Research being conducted on fibromyalgia is focused on better understanding why people with fibromyalgia have an increased sensitivity to pain, if there is a genetic connection, and what role chronic inflammation might play.

Fibromyalgia Hope Found Through Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Many fibromyalgia sufferers and their families are hoping to find a solution – nobody wants to live with chronic pain and extreme fatigue day in and day out.  Unfortunately, most treatment approaches are aimed at medicating symptoms, which only serves to provide short-term relief.  People with fibromyalgia are finding hope and long-lasting relief with upper cervical chiropractic care, which is a unique niche within the greater chiropractic profession.

Upper cervical chiropractors look at a very specific area of the spine – the upper two vertebrae – and how it relates to the body's overall ability to function normally.  The atlas and axis vertebrae protect the brainstem, a critical component of the body's central nervous system.  Since fibromyalgia sufferers process pain differently, it only makes sense to examine the pathways over which pain signals travel.  An upper cervical misalignment can interfere with the normal transmission of pain signals and can lead to fibromyalgia symptoms.  Upper cervical chiropractic care is gentle, natural, and can be a lasting solution for those who are coping with fibromyalgia.

The Rider’s Spine: The Key to Stability On and Off Your Horse

Welcome riders! Regardless of your discipline, skill level, age or physical ability, I’m here to share with you the benefits of upper cervical chiropractic for the equestrian. Whether your focus is dressage, jumping, barrel racing, trail riding or any equestrian pursuit, reducing your body’s imbalances and misalignments can improve your riding. If you’ve suffered an injury or are simply suffering from the toll that riding can take on your body, the specific, scientific approach of upper cervical chiropractic care may bring the relief you need.

Many riders seek chiropractic care for specific pain, such as:

  • pain in the back, neck or shoulders
  • problems with range of motion
  • chronic discomfort from previous injuries
  • perceived imbalances (one leg feels longer than the other, for instance)

Sometimes, an equestrian’s issues are less pronounced but still affect their riding and should be addressed. Most riders know what it feels like to be off balance or have experienced the sense of riding “against” the motion rather than “with” your horse. In riding, as in other sports, trying to put your body in the “correct” position is not the same as finding your center of balance and moving freely from a secure, centered foundation.

Sometimes, your own skeletal structure may be what’s hindering your progress. Working to improve areas such as your position, aids, flexibility, strength or overall riding skill are important goals. But if skeletal misalignments are preventing you from moving in a balanced, pain-free, comfortable way, you won’t reap the full benefit of all those other efforts.

Simply put, the biomechanics of horseback riding stresses your frame to begin with, and many riders have pre-existing skeletal issues that affect their posture and movement before they even get on their horse. Also, just like our horses, we tend to favor one side over the other, which can accentuate imbalances.

Ideally, our bodies naturally adjust to the stresses of our athletic pursuits. But sometimes, they need a nudge in the right direction to help the healing process begin. The scientific evaluation provided at each check up allows me to determine if and when an adjustment is needed, and to make a small and specific correction that is more likely to provide lasting results.

Coming Back Into Balance

  • Realigning your skeletal system can alleviate pain and set your body up to better handle the impact of riding
  • Better control over your own body can help you use more subtle and correct aids and more clearly influence your horse
  • Helping your body correct misalignments can provide more energy and focus during riding and everyday activities

Adjusting Your Priorities

You probably spend a lot of time, money and energy on your horse’s well being. If you’re competing, that might even include bodywork, chiropractic, acupuncture, laser therapy or other treatments for your horse. Of course, each of these therapies can be valuable in addressing problems or preventing future issues. But don’t forget to focus on your body as well. A skeletal misalignment may be the sticking point in your continued progress, and bringing your body back into balance might be the catalyst needed to improve your riding performance -- and help your horse do HIS job more easily.
